Default Help!!

Well let me start by saying that I will be the first to admit i probably suck!

I do great in GW playing PvE. I am a team player that sacrifices at least 2-3 slots, depending on the mission or quest to help my fellow team mates out by loading skills like heal party, re-birth ect.
In fact, i enjoy the Pve aspect most of all in this game to the point where I have finished all the missions, bonus's, and most quests.
HOWEVER, recently i tried to "farm" and or "solo" with my
Lvl20, 589,623 XP, tons of elites and reg skills, fully loaded, 2005 model R/Mo.

I get my ass handed to me dam near every time. I do less that OK. I have read every stinking forum, tried to avoid posting stupid questions to get help since there are like 1gazzilion posts and threads on crap like this, ( and also to avoid Savio from having to tell me 'heres 3 gazzilion posts on that"
"CLOSED!" sigh, and i don't know where else to turn.

I have tried to come up with dozens of skill/rune/armor/attribute points/weapons, combos with poor results. Recently i tried a suggested build by Silly Ranger, that was based on a heavy emphasis on my Mo second for farming Drakes. Well either I stink at this, of the new patch ruined this build, cause the drakes owned me and when i did get the upper hand, those stupid desert spiders finished me off.

The breaker. My son who plays GW also has a lvl 17 W/mo, he stops playing for 3 months, decides to start playing again, sees me trying to farm, trapper nuker, interrupter, strip dancing, and getting whooped. He goes to Augury Rock and types "lol i just killed 15 Griff's" AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I am about to give up hope here. I know I have to use my Ranger with different tactics. I have tried a bunch and while i can farm at a rate of what feels like 200 gold an hour, i feel like my char should be so much more than that after all of the time and xp i have dedicated to it.

This is my one and only char. I set out to master it and am falling short of my goal. The Ranger class is a challenge to use correctly, and i like that, but man this is going nowhere.

One thing i have not done is biased my Ranger into 1 type of profession. Is this the answerer? Am i supposed to be a Trapper, Or a Interrupter, or what ever, and learn to concentrate on just one aspect such as these?

I need advice, either more links to read (Savio ) or in this forum. My guild is comprised of casual players, Pve mostly, and I don't have an experienced Ranger to help me out.

Ps. Please don't stereo type me. I'm am 37 have been a gamer since Atari came out. I pwn at CS and BF2. (even at held events) I can play! But this is kicking my ass. Ughhhh

My ranger/monk does very well with:

1) ignite arrow, 2) poison arrow Elite or apply poison, 3) penetrating shot, 4&5) animal you can use savage shot and pin down if you don't like animal 6) troll ungent 7) mend ailment reloads faster and heals or purge conditions and 8) holy veil counts as an enchanment if you have an enchantment bow or remove hex

I have found that trapping does not work for farming.

Farming the Desert, they all are particularry vunerable to poision, but the mandibles and the giants like to spread it to you.

Ignite counts as the AoE nerf, and expect a bit of yo-yo attacking, apply posion repalces ignite arrow but poison arrow does not. Barrage can be used but since it is not combinable with any thing else, ony use it when you have a bow string that they monsters are particularly vunerable to ie. fire creatures with an icy string and ice creatures with a fire string.

Another build you might look at is ranger/ele use antidote signet instead of mend ailmant and conjure element, ie frost for icy string and flame for fire string. For this build you would want to drop animal skills and put the points into elemental skills. Use Meladru's resilance to help you deal with hexes but it does not remove them.

Ranger/Mesmer works well: shatter hex and conjure phantasm I have found works the best.

Warrior skills: you want to avoid, some of the tactics can be helpful but only the armor boost.

Necro: I have never liked necro so I can't help you there.

OP - Different classes do better in different areas againts different types of mops. That is good to keep in mind when farming an area.

I am by no means a farming expert. In fact I'm still pretty new to the solo farm, but I did want to try a couple things out.
Ranger - With my ranger I like to grab 4 - 5 henchies and farm Grenths Footprint and Sorrows Furnace. A ranger does really well here. Also with a combo of the extinction ritual and barrage I can farm charr hides in old ascalon missions and make some pretty good money in a short time. Like I said I'm fairly new and haven't really tried to build an invincible ranger that can solo higher level areas, but it might be possible with the right combo of secondary skills. I haven't tried this because I think the ranger is much much more powerful in a small group setting. So I take Lina, Claude/Eve, Mhenlo/Alesia, and Thom for fire islands or southern shiverpeaks farming. I still get good drops and I mow through the mops pretty quick.

Monk - I made a monk so I could fit into some group builds a bit easier. Basically I wanted to farm Sorrows Furnace, UW, FoW and such with my guild. Having a healer/smiter/protector is available helps fill in gaps a lot.

I wanted to try and do that 55hp solo thing with it just to see how it works and get some experience on what skills other than Dwayna's Kiss, Orison, Word, etc have to offer. I am slowly learning how to solo farm some different areas with a monk. They can go places and do things others can't. When I'm at 55hp and killing griffons or minos all is well, but if I try and go take on desert spiders with that simple build they eat me up. My point is that very specific powerful builds are usually good for a very specific purpose. So keep that in mind when you are trying to farm. Your ranger just isn't built to handle that sort of massive physical assault.

So to summarize just try and build your ranger how you like to play it. Find out the areas that you do well in. Start out with lots of henchies (6 - 8) and see if how do. If something is eating you up think why and what you need in your skill bar to counter it. Then when you get your build down, start removing a henchie at a time and see what happens. If it's all good, keep on modifying your skill set to see if you can get better efficiency.

At a minimum in tough places I take Lina, Mhenlo, and Thom or my pet.

Thanks for the replies! I have been fiddling around with this a bit. Not because I have to but because I want to see what I can do with my Ranger.
I will try the things you have suggested, and I am too realizing that maybe i have to come to grips that the Ranger class just has to do things different.

Oh yea! Thanks Savio! Is the "new" Ranger area been around very long?
